Le 15 novembre 1873 il avait été l'un des rescapés du naufrage du Ville du Havre, naviguant de New York au Havre. Le bateau était entré en collision avec le Loch Earn (Londres - New York) près de Cardiff (226 disparus, 87 survivants, dont seulement 27 passagers). Il avait nagé pendant une heure et avait été recueilli par un bateau français (Talane).
