Nicolaas Meijer werd geboren in Rotterdam.

Op 23 sep 1891 (16 jaar) heeft hij zich vrijwillig aangemeld bij het Nederlands Leger, als tamboer, met een premie van 30 gulden.

Hij werd geplaatst bij het 4de regiment infanterie.
Op 1 maart 1892 werd hij korporaal en op 11 juli 1892 (17 jaar) hoornblazer.
Later is hij overgegaan naar het Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger (KNIL)
Op 6 november 1894 overgenomen van het 4e reg infanterie met een op de 3e tevoren aangegane nieuwe verbintenis voor 6 jaar bij de koloniale troepen, zowel in als buiten Europa, ingaande de 6e november 1894 met f.300,00 als gratificatie, met teruggave van f. 18,75 van vroeger genoten premie ad f.30,00.

Hij heeft deelgenomen aan de Atjeh-oorlog onder generaal van Heutsz.

Gehuwd op 13 nov 1902 in Nederlands Indië met Elodie Ambrosia Swaving. Dit huwelijk is in 1905 ontbonden.

Hij zwaait af als sergeant-majoor op 13 dec 1906.

Op 15 april 1908 is hij gehuwd met Cornelia in 't Veld.
Uit dit huwelijk zijn 6 kinderen geboren (4 jongens, 2 meisjes).

Muziek was zijn grote hobby. Hij heeft zijn kinderen pianoles gegeven en zelf
speelde hij op zijn viool. Dan ging hij naar zolder om bij de kanariepieten viool te spelen.

Hij was bode bij de N.V. Rotterdamsche Verzekering-Societeiten (RVS).
Deze baan had hij verkregen door een familierelatie.
Nicolaas Meijer overleed op 57 jarige leeftijd op 13 juli 1932 in Rotterdam.
