Adrianus (Janus) Maat was een zeer vastberaden man. Hij leefde echter voor zichzelf. Na 10 jaren besloot hij in 1917 zijn melkslijterij aan het Noordeinde 111 te verkopen. Dit leverde hem in die jaren zo'n slordige Fl.200.000,- op terwijl het pand in het verleden door zijn vader gekocht was voor Fl.8000,- Hij verkocht het pand met bovengelegen woning en erf met stallen groot: 1are - 83 ct are inclusief drie paarden en een wagen. Janus was erg verkwistend en een afvallige in de familie. Hij heeft zich zelf bekwaamt in de Franse taal die hij zowel vloeiend kon spreken, schrijven en lezen. Janus las erg veel boeken zowel in het frans alsook in het hollands waaronder het boek " De aarde en hare Volken " Hij was een groot liefhebber van paarden en begaafd in het tekenen van zijn lievelingen, de paarden. Lange tijd is hij de vaste koetsier geweest van een notaris, ene Bikbergen die woonachtig was aan de Willemstraat te 's-Gravenhage. Hij vertoefde ook veel in Parijs. Zijn tweede huwelijk was een zeer vruchtbaar huwelijk. Er moet dan ook zeer weinig tijd geweest zijn om te lezen, gezien het aantal kinderen dat uit dit huwelijk is voortgekomen.
Johanna Hinfelaar was ziekelijk (diabetes) en is krankzinnig gestorven.
