He died on 6 June 1251, age 26–27, his mother suspecting that the allies of the Avesnes family of Hainaut were responsible in at a tournament in Trazegnies, Hainaut, Belgium (David Crouch states William died from a heart attack) (Paul Arblaster states William was murdered).
He is buried in Abbaye du repos de Notre Dame Marquette-lès-Lille, Nord, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.
