Man Kills Self in East Side Barn
BODY OF SYLVESTER YORK FOUND EARLY THIS MORNINGThe dead body of Sylvester York, age 37 was found about 6 o’clock this morning by Emery Sanders when the latter went to his barn, located at the corner of Warren and Third streets, to get some wood. As he stepped into the barn, Mr. Sanders saw the body lying on its face in a manger, with the head under a feed box. Mr. Sanders at first thought that the man was asleep and tried to arouse him. Failing in this he called nearby neighbors, and then notified Chief of Police W.H. Barker. When Mr. Barker arrived he found a bottle of chloroform lying by the body. He found also that the man’s face was partially buried in some rags, which evidently were used in inhaling the fumes. The body was removed to the Haverly Mortuary, and was identified by several people as being Sylvester York. Coroner O.D. Emerson was called and pronounced it death due to administration of chloroform. No note or communication of any kind could be found. The personal effects included a few scraps of paper, two knives, shaving outfit and two handkerchiefs. It is said that the deceased had lived around Mitchell for some time. On Wednesday he returned from Nebraska, where he had been working. He is said to have talked with a cousin without indicating any unusual condition of depression. Survivors are the mother, Mrs. Leonard Hopper, two brothers, David and Louis, and one sister, Katie Hopper, living near Hoosier Heights. Funeral arrangements had not been completed this morning.
