    Nadat de troon enige maanden vacant geweest was, werd Anthemius door toedoen van Paus Hilarius en de Byzantijnse keizer Leo I op de troon gezet.
    Anthemius probeerde een grootse expeditie tegen de Vandalen in Afrika te houden maar werd door Geiserik verslagen. Dat gaf Ricimer de gelegenheid zijn politieke ambities als man achter de troon verder gestalte te geven. Ricimer belegerde de keizer in Rome en deze wist niet beter te doen dan de standbeelden in de stad te ontdoen van alle koper om de Germanen mee af te kopen. Het volk kwam in opstand en Anthemius moest vluchten. Het verhaal gaat dat hij als bedelaar de stad probeerde te ontkomen maar ontdekt werd, en door Gundobad, de latere koning van de Bourgondiërs, onthoofd werd.
