Notes about David I van Schotland

David I, Schots-Gaelisch: Daibhidh I of Dabíd mac Maíl Choluim (Schotland, ca. 1084 – Carlisle, 24 mei 1153) was koning van Schotland 1124-1153. Hij was een zoon van Malcolm III en Margaretha van Schotland. Hij is ook bekend onder de naam David de Heilige.

David huwde rond 1113 met gravin Mathilde van Huntingdon, dochter en erfgename van Waltheof, 1e graaf van Northampton. Hierdoor verkreeg hij het graafschap Huntingdon.

Het testament van Edgar bepaalde dat Schotland werd opgedeeld tussen zijn twee jongere broers. Alexander erfde de koningskroon en de gebieden ten noorden van de rivieren Fife en Clyde, terwijl de gebieden ten zuiden daarvan, Lothian en Cumbria aan David zouden vallen, met de titel graaf van Cumberland. Nadat zijn broer in 1124 was overleden wist David heel Schotland onder zijn gezag te brengen.

David en Mathilde kregen vier kinderen, waarvan er twee overleefden:

* Hendrik van Schotland (1115 – 1152), 3e graaf van Huntingdon
* Claricia, ongehuwd gestorven

David werd begraven in de abdij van Dunfermline.
