Na de Noelle'sche Handelsschule in Osnabrück te hebben afgelopen was hij werkzaam in banken te Londen en te Parijs. De eerste maart 1885 trad hij in dienst der firma P.J. Landry te ´s-Gravenhage, door zijn grootvader de heer P.J. Landry in 1842 aldaar opgericht, van welke bank hij naderhand eigenaar werd. Als afstammeling van een Duits geslacht door zijn vader en van Hugenoten door zijn moeder was hij zeer begaafd, hetgeen hem in staat stelde niet slechts een zeer bekwaam bankier te zijn, doch zich bovendien vier vreemde talen, namelijk Frans, Duits, Engels, Italiaans eigen te maken (Genealogie Gebel p. 51-53)
