Robert was op 12 juli 1340 reeds ridder, op 12 april 1344 maarschalk van het Sticht Utrecht, in 1346 beleend met het goed te Renswoude, op 1 sept. 1346 heer van den Berghe, voor 8 jan. 1347 heer van Asperen door huwelijk. Bovengenoemde geboorteschatting van circa 1320 is gerelateerd aan een huwelijksschatting van 1320 voor Jan III. Aangezien vader Jan III waarschijnlijk in 1314 zal zijn hertrouwd zal diens oudste zoon uit dit tweede huwelijk in 1314/15 zijn geboren. Derhalve zal ook Robert van Arkel eerder geboren zijn dan de schatting van 1320. Geboren circa 1316/20 lijkt een veilige inschatting. Uit één of meerdere relaties had hij twee natuurlijke kinderen: Robert (van Renswoude) en Jan (van der Borch).Source 1
