In zijn jeugd kreeg hij alleen het lager onderwijs. In 1913 ging hij in dienst. Volgens de keuringsraad was hij 1 meter en 365 mm. Op 28 juni 1912 sprak de keuringsraad zich over hem uit. Willem had geen (lichamelijke) gebreken volgens geneeskundigen. Hij was geschikt voor dienst. Willem had een voorkeur voor de Huzaren in Ede of Amersfoort. In de 2«sup»e«/sup» plaats wilde hij de infanterie. Hij was geschikt voor de Huzaren. Willem bleef tot ? in dienst. Hij behoorde tot de Hervormde Kerk in Ede. Toen hij trouwde met Berendina van Driesten, ging hij behoren tot de Gereformeerde Gemeente te Barneveld. Zijn vrouw Berendina van Driesten was haar hele leven lid van de Gereformeerde Gemeenten. Zij was de dochter van Johannes van Driesten en Willempje Hendriksen.

In de jaren '20 ging hij wonen aan de Veldhuizerweg 12 te Lunteren. Daar bleef hij (m.u.v. enkele korte periode's) wonen tot zijn overlijden. Op 21 december 1922 vertrok het gezin van Willem van Leijenhorst naar Barneveld. Vanaf 15 december 1926 woonde hij weer in Lunteren. Daar woonde hij aan Lb 81 (Meulunteren 81). In 1930 werd dat adres gewijzigd in Lb 68 (Meulunteren 68). In 1941 werd datzelfde adres Veldhuizerweg 12 te Lunteren, wat nu nog bestaat.«sup» «/sup» Daar woonde tot voor kort zoon Jacob Willem.

Willem van Leijenhorst was landbouwer in Esveld onder Barneveld van 22 december 1922 tot 15 december 1926. Hij kocht in 1918, 1919 een huis aan de Veldhuizerweg van Aalbert van Dronkelaar.
