    Blokmaker was in de scheepsbouw het ambacht voor het vervaardigen van blokken, ook wel katrol genoemd. Een in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw onmisbaar ambacht; benodigd in de scheepsbouw, de werkplaats waar het ambacht werd beoefend stond bekend als blokkenmakerij.

    Over de blokkenmakerijen, waarvan er vele honderden moeten zijn geweest, is relatief weinig bekend, omdat dit in de schaduw stond van het grote werk. Een blokkenmakerij is bovengemiddeld bekend, omdat hier een prachtig uithangbord van bewaard is gebleven. Zie bijgevoegde afbeelding. Dit is dus niet van Derks Blokkenmakerij, maar om een indruk te geven van zijn ambacht.
