    Volgens kleinzoon Hendrik (29-5-1925) had opa 12 jaar in Indie gediend. Nadat hij samen met zijn broer Willem op 5-6-1859 een vracht turf per schip naar Amsterdam had gebracht, hadden zij daar een gezellige avond doorgebracht of doogezakt. Hendrik had uit geldgebrek voor 12 jaar Indie getekend. Dit moet geweest zijn ca 1882 (ivm geboorte Aaltje van Essen) want hij had niet geweten dat zijn toenmalige vriendin Geesje Lassche van hem in verwachting was; zij huwde later op 9-2-1887 Willem Jan van Essen; het huwelijk werd op 4-9-1893 door echtscheiding ontbonden) en huwde in 1896 met de vader van haar dochter, Hendrik Stoevelaar.

    Hendrik komt februari 1896 uit Ned. Indie terug in ambt Hardenberg en vertrekt 30-7-1896 naar Zwartsluis.
