Notes about Gwijde II VAN DAMPIERRE

Is de enige zoon van Willem I van Dampierre en van Ermengarde van Toucy. Gwijde II, die opvolgde in 1178, nam in 1191 deel aan de Derde Kruistocht, waar hij zich bij Sint-Jan van Akko in de strijd liet opmerken. Zijn huwelijk met Mathilde I van Bourbon in 1196, berzorgde hem de titel van connétable van Champagne, en maakte hem een der machtigste mannen van zijn tijd. Hij onderscheidde zich bij de slag bij Bouvines in 1214, waar hij een bijdrage leverde aan de overwinning van Filips II van Frankrijk. Deze veldslag wordt beschouwd als de geboorte van het moderne Frankrijk, omdat hierdoor de band tussen de monarchie en het land een aanvang nam. Vermoedelijk onder het bestuur van Gwijde II werd in Saint-Dizier de hoofdkerk gebouwd, gewijd aan Onze-Lieve-Vrouw.

Door zijn huwelijk met Mathilde in 1196 werd hij ook heer van Bourbon.
