Boudewijn II de Kale, geb. omstr. 864, graaf van Vlaanderen 879-918, usurpeerde na afloop van invallen van de Noormannen van de jaren 879-883 grondbezit en rechten in de hele streek tussen Schelde en Artois, gold als grondlegger van Vlaanderen als terrotoriaal vorstendom, wisselde herhaaldelijk van partij in de strijd tussen de diverse Westfrankische Koningen en liet aartsbisschop Fulco van Reims (900) en graaf Heribert I van Vermandois (voor 907) vermoorden, richtte een groot aantal burchten op ter bescherming van zijn gebied, overl. 10 sept. 918, begr. Gent, tr. omstr. 884 Aelfthryth van Wessex, geb. omstr. 872 (dochter van Alfred I de Grote, koning van Engeland 871-899, en Elswitha van Gainsborough), stak omstr. 884 het Kanaal over, gravin van Vlaanderen, overl. 7 juni 929
