Het gebied dat nu het Oude Noorden van Rotterdam heet, behoorde tot de 19e eeuw tot de ambachtsheerlijkheid Blommersdijk. Het Zwaanshals wordt al in de 16e eeuw vermeld. Dit was zowel het buurtje als de naam van een huis, De Swaenshals. De naam komt waarschijnlijk van de bocht die de Rotte hier maakt.[2] Blommersdijk wordt al in de 13e eeuw genoemd. Er werden ook verschillende buitenplaatsen aangelegd, zoals Soetendaal, waaraan de Soetendaalseweg zijn naam dankt.
