Notes about Elzina "Elsje" Stegmeijer

Elzina Stegmeijer werd geboren op zaterdag 9 augustus 1890 in Woldendorp als dochter van Battelina Kiel en haar echtgenoot Jan Stegmeijer. Haar vader is de schoenmaker in het dorp. Tussen 1896 en 1902 gaat ze naar de dorpsschool en leert daar lezen, schrijven en rekenen.

In 1907 trouwt haar zus Anna met Berend Mossel uit Termunten. Eén van haar nieuwe zwagers is de charmante Lukas Mossel, met wie Elsje verkering krijgt. Nadat ze zwanger van hem wordt - terwijl Elsje nog maar 18 is - trouwen ze in juli 1909 in Termunten, en gaan wonen in Termunterzijl; later verhuizen ze naar Woldendorp.

In 1914 komt het verre oorlogstoneel wat dichterbij als een brigade van 1600 man Britse soldaten wordt geïnterneerd in het nabijgelegen Groningen, die daar tot 1919 blijven.

Lukas heeft ernstige last van hooikoorts, wat niet prettig is in het boerenleven. Bovendien is er niet veel werk in deze afgelegen hoek van Groningen. Daarom verhuizen Elsje, Lukas met hun gezin, samen met het gezin van Lukas' broer Meindert, naar het verre IJmuiden, vlak bij de Noordzee; Lukas wordt daar grondwerker.
Vanaf 1940 wordt IJmuiden door de Duitsers omgebouwd tot een ware vesting, vanwege de strategische ligging en de Hoogovens.

In juli 1959 vieren Elsje en Lukas hun gouden huwelijksverjaardag.

Lukas overlijdt in 1968, en op gevorderde leeftijd gaat Elsje naar bejaardenhuis Seevanck in IJmuiden, waar zij op 22 april 1973 op 82-jarige leeftijd overlijdt.
