Karel is waarschijnlijk opgegroeid bij zijn ouders in Haarlem, en lijkt het beroep van zijn vader als smid gevolgd te hebben, want dat gaf hij op bij zijn huwelijk met Gerritje in 1904.
Later is hij klinker geworden. Klinker was indertijd een goedbetalend beroep, en kennelijk verhuisde Karel met zijn werk mee; eerst naar Schoten in Belgie (waar hij in 1908 woonde), later is hij (kennelijk met zijn vader cq ouders) verhuisd naar het Roergebied in Duitsland (Oberhausen), waar toen veel werk te vinden was. Na de geboorte van zijn zoon Joop is hij voor zijn werk verhuisd naar Curacao, en keerde eind jaren twintig (?) weer terug, waarna hij in Beverwijk ging wonen.
Zijn kleinzoon Lukas vertelde dat hij altijd met zijn werk mee verhuisde.

Werd door zijn kleinzoon Cas herinnerd als een sterke man. Hij was een liefhebber van vissen, zowel op binnenwater als op zee. De Noordpier bij IJmuiden was een geliefde stek. Om daar te komen moest je kilometers over de weg naar Wijk aan Zee en dan vijf kilometer over het strand, om vervolgens op de pier proberen te komen, te vissen en dan de terugreis nog. De fiets, niet zo comfortabel als nu, was altijd afgeladen met bamboehengels, leefnetten en ander gereedschap. Werphengels kende je toen nog niet. Kleinzoon Cas ziet die afgeladen fiets nog voor zich. Hij was toen rond de 8 of 9 jaar en kon natuurlijk niet met opa mee.
