Johann Bernard Poiesz, koopman van beroep, woonde te Ibbenbüren. Met zijn vrouw Anna Maria Schulte en drie kinderen kwam hij omstreeks 1820 naar Nederland en vestigde zich te Sneek.
Vanuit Sneek trok hij van markt tot markt en bezocht kermissen in de wijde omgeving. Daarbij werd hij bijgestaan door de oudste zoon Mauritz.
Een gemakkelijk leven zullen Johan Bernard en Anna Maria niet gehad hebben. De emigratie naar Nederland is uiteraard ook niet ingegeven door weelde. Neem daarbij de kindersterfte, die de familie niet bespaard is gebleven.
