Op 1 april 1818 werd op initiatief van Johannes van den Bosch de Maatschappij van Weldadigheid opgericht, met als doel de vele, door slechte omstandigheden getroffen gezinnen, vondelingen en wezen de kans op een beter bestaan te geven. Daartoe werden kolonien opgericht in Frederiksoord, Wilhelminaoord en Willemsoord. In de eenvoudige,maar voor die tijd ruime en goede woningen werden de gezinnen ondergebracht. Deze zg. koloniën namen deel aan de ontginning en brachten cultuurlandschappen in ontwikkeling. Er heerste blijkbaar een streng regime, want verscheidene deserteerden uit de koloniën. In Frederiksoord is een permanente tentoonstelling hierover ingericht.
Tjalling Gerrits Gerritsma is een van de 52 proefkolonisten van de proefkolonie Frederiksoord. Deze proefkolonie en haar eerste bewoners is beschreven in het boek "De Proefkolonie" van Wil Schackmann. In dit boek vertelt hij op levendige wijze over het ontstaan van de koloniën die in het begin van de negentiende eeuw in Drenthe werden gesticht. De in 1818 opgerichte Maatschappij van Weldadigheid wilde verarmde landgenoten uit hun toestand van 'diepe ellende en daaruit spruitende zedelijke verbastering' halen. In een nog woest en maakbaar Drente zouden zij leren met landarbeid de eigen kost te verdienen. En daardoor vanzelf betere mensen worden.
