Bij de militaire keuring staat omschreven dat hij "aveugle" (slechtziend) was. [FS Film: 008904399 Im:7/388, nr.34-21]

Reeds voor dat Einighausen een afzonderlijke parochie werd, was er een "koster", die bij de diensten in de (uitgebreide) kapel assisteerde. In een document van 1836 staat hij als Herman(us) Dirks vermeld. Doch merkwaardigerwijze kon deze vrome Einighausenaar niet eens zijn eigen naam schrijven.
Dit laatste zal dan ook wel de hoofdreden zijn geweest, dat hij die taak niet kon blijven waarnemen, nadat Einighausen in de loop van datzelfde jaar van de parochie Limbricht was afgescheiden. De pastoor en het kerkbestuur van Einighausen wensten immers aan de functie van koster tevens die van onderwijzer te verbinden.

Omdat Herman's neef, Jan Karel Kusters al onderwijzer was, werd deze door het kersverse kerkbestuur in 1837 tot koster benoemd.
