Zijn voornaam stamt uit de staat van goed van kleinzoon Roeland, waar wordt vermeld dat Gillijnkens vader Roeland de oude zou zijn.

Waarschijnlijk had hij een broer Joris: "Roelandt de Zuttere en Sijmoen fs Jans Cokenaets voogd van 3 kinderen van Joris de Zuttere bij overlijden van Tanneken fa Cornelis Cokenaets hun moeder (5-12-1559) [SvG regiter 624, fol. 128r]

In de Vde penning cohier van Adegem (16 juni 1582) staat de volgende eigenaar/pachter vermeld: kinderen Roelandt de Zuttere 7 ghemet lant (2 pont - 4 schellijnghen).

De naam de Zutter(e), Sutter(e), Sitter(e) komt veel voor in de regio. De familie-relaties zijn gebaseerd op de staten van goed en parochieregisters bewerkt door resp. W. Steeghers en G. de Lille. Deze zijn te raadplegen met behulp van pdf-bestanden (zie Meetjesland). De originele inschrijvingen van voor ±1680 zijn niet te raadplegen op arche.be.
Er zijn nog andere takken van deze familie met voornamen als Adriaan, Georg/Joris en Jan. De relatie met deze familie is (nog) niet onderzocht.
