    De familie is grotendeels haar bezit kwijtgeraakt door de Beurskrach van 1929. Hiervan is nog een brief bewaard gebleven dat door Carlos zelf aan zijn zoon Anibal is geschreven in 1930.

His first venture was a sugar mill and he did very well, but it burned to the ground and he had to start over again. After that he built a nother sugar refinery and acquired a quartz mine and was sole representative of Gold Medal Flour in the North of Brazil.

His hobby was speaking Latin and he was very pleased when he found someone with whom he couldconverse. At the conclusion of his visit, as a gesture of appriciation, he bestowed the minor title of 'de' upon Don Carlos, so that our last name became 'de Paula Lopes'.
