Luitfrid II de Sundgau se marie avec Hiltrude, fille et héritière d’Otbert III[1]. Pour un certain nombre d’historiens et de généalogistes, elle est Hiltrude de Wormsgau, peut-être fille du comte Robert VI et de Chiltrude de Bavière, petite-fille de Charles Martel.

Luitfrid II de Sungau, descendant du duc Etichon-Adalric d'Alsace, possède des terres du côté du Petit Rombach à Sainte-Croix-aux-Mines qu'on appelle plus tard Belmont et Echéry. Ce comte du Sundgau est rappelé dans le diplôme de Lothaire le jeune pour le couvent d’Eschery, comme père du comte Leutard et de son frère Hugues. Il meurt vers l’an 802[2].
