      ROOTHAES (Adriaen), Hij was kapitein op een der gehuurde schepen, dal hij, naar het schijnt, naar zichzelf had herdoopt. Deze Roothaes werd in 1654 door de amsterdamse Admiraliteit vereerd met een gouden gedenkpenning aan een dito keten, wegens ijver, moed en beleid en omdat hij met zijn tochtgenooten niet minder dan 13 prijzen had veroverd. (De Jonge, Dl. 1, 466). Hij heeft later een zeer verdienstelijke loopbaan afgelegd in dienst der O.-l. Compagnie; in 1664 was hij Gouverneur op Ceylon.

      The first document is a contemporary copy of a letter from the "commandeur" of Galle, Adriaan Roothaas, to Raja Sinha II. 1665 January 29. Among them is one letter from governor Laurens Pijl to the sultan of the Maldives, 1668 December 4, in Dutch and Maldivian [279] .

The betrothal of Esther de Solemne to Governor van Goens Wfis preceded by a very interesting ceremony, On the 4th August, 1667, the naming of three new bastions in the Galle ramparts took place. It was decided by the Political Council that the Governor, accompanied by the Commandeur and Members of Council, together with Juffrouw Esther de Solemne, Mevrouw Maria Wennink, the wife of Commandeur Roothaas, and her elder daughter, should perform the ceremony, the bastions to be named the Sun, the Moon, and theStar, respectively. Juffrouw de Solemne fired the first cannon on the Sun bastion ; Mevrouw Rootbaas did the same on the Moon bastion ; and the young lady performed a like service on the Star bastion. This pleasing function was followed by the announcement on the llfch August of the engagement of Governor van Goens to Esther de Solemne. The first publication of the banns of marriage took place on the 14th August, and the marriage was solemnised in Colombo on the 8th September. ROOTHAES (Adriaen), Commandeur en Kapitein van een der gehuurde schepen in de Middellandsche zee
Hem werd in 1654 door de Admiraliteit van Amsterdam een gouden keten en een penning van hetzelfde metaal geschonken, omdat hij vele blijken van moed en beleid gegeven en met zijn togtgenooten dertien prijzen veroverd had.
