    Het regiment werd opgericht in 1701 als Regiment de Belcastel. Bij de reorganisatie van 1752 werd het op 2 bataljons gebracht. Dit 2e bataljon werd gevormd door het voormalige Regiment du Vergé. In 1772 werd de officiële benaming vastgesteld als Regiment Nationalen 3. In 1795 (Franse tijd) ging het regiment op in het 2e bataljon van de 3e Halvebrigade.

    Het regiment bestond uit 2 bataljons, elk met een grenadier-compagnie en zes musketier-compagnieën. Hoewel het regiment officieel een nummer/naam droeg, werd dit alleen gebruikt op hun wapens en uitrusting, en waren ze beter bekend onder de naam van hun commandant (kolonel). Begin 1793 bedroeg de (theoretische) sterkte 762 man. Na de oorlogsverklaring op 1 februari 1793 van de Franse Republiek aan de Koning van Engeland en de Stadhouder der Nederlanden werd de sterkte opgevoerd naar 983 man.
