Notes about Marinus Cornelis "Rein" de Laat

Toen de moeder van Rein stierf was hij ruim twee jaar oud.
Op de begrafenis was een jonge vrouw aanwezig, Ant Vermolen, 33 jaar en verloofd met Jacobus van der Staak.
Zij nam de jongen mee naar haar ouderlijk huis in Berkel Enschot en vroeg haar moeder zolang voor hem te zorgen totdat zij zelf getrouwd zou zijn. Dan zou ze hem meenemen en zelf de zorg op zich nemen.
Maar toen het eenmaal zover was was Rein zo goed thuis bij de Vermolens dat hij daar gebleven is.
Toen hij elf jaar was ging hij in de leer bij een smid te Tilburg. Iedere dag te voet van Berkel naar Tilburg.
Toen hij vijftien was kwam zijn eigen vader uit Moergestel om hem weer mee terug te nemen, ze konden daar de verdiensten goed gebruiken maar dat ging niet door tenzij hij over al die jaren een vergoeding betaalde. Dat kon de man niet dus bleef Rein waar hij was.
Ant Vermolen huwde Jacobus van der Staak maar was al snel weduwe.
Jan van Helmond die in 1903 achterbleef met drie kleine kinderen zocht al gauw een vrouw en kwam via kennissen in contact met Ant Vermolen. Zo werd zij de moeder van de toen tweejarige Anna van Helmond.
Ant kwam veel in Berkel Enschot met haar kinderen en zodoende kenden Rein en Anna elkaar al een leven lang.
Toen Rein naar de meisjes begon te kijken liet hij een oogje vallen op Anna.
Ze verloofden zich in 1919 en Rein ging bij de van Helmonds in de kost om elkaar vaker te kunnen zien.
