In 448 wordt hij de eerste Merovingische Koning. In 428 en 451 is hij Koning der Franken in Westfalen. Hij werd vooral bekend om zijn strijd tegen de Hunnen. In 451 helpt hij de Romeinse Generaal Aelius en Theoderik, Koning der Gothen om de opmars van Atilla de Hun te stuiten.De grote veldslag was bij Chalons sur Marne. De Hunnen wisten zich terug te trekken achter de Rijn. Hij werd opgevolgd door zijn zoon Childerik I. Aangenomen wordt, dat alle latere Koningen van hem zouden afstammen, als mede 34 Presidenten.
