Dé Jacob van Heemskerck, die in 1595 met Willem Barentsz een passage naar Indië zocht over de Noord. IN de winter van 1596 strandden zij bij Nova Zembla en waren gedwongen te overwinteren. Eenmaal behouden weergekeerd, voer hij in 1601 opnieuw uit, nu als opperzeevoogd. Tijdens zijn reis veroverde hij een Portugese kraak met 40 ton goud. Als admiraal trok hij aan het hoofd van een dertig schepen tellende vloot in 1607 eropuit om de Spanjaarden een les te leren. Dat lukte tijdens de slag bij Gibraltar, maar Jacob bezweek aan zijn verwondingen.
