Notes about Michiel van MIEREVELT Jansz


Geboren op de (Koren)Markt in Delft en opgeleid in het atelier van Anthonie van Blockland. Ontwikkelde zich tot de populairste portretschilder van zijn tijd; in de database van het Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie zijn alleen al ruim 200 portretten van zijn atelier te vinden. Hij portretteeerde veel lieden uit de Delftse elite, het Haagse hof en de Hollandse nobelen, waaronder P.C. Hooft en Constantijn Huygens. Er wordt gezegd dat zijn atelier ruim tienduizend portretten vervaardigde.

Dat schilderen legde hem geen windeieren. Alleen al tussen 1619 en 1632 bestelde de magistraat van Delft voor 1161 gulden aan portretten bij de meester. In 1629 woonde hij in ·ÄòHet Gekroonde Neteldoeck·Äô aan de Markt op nummer 27. Ernaast woonde zijn dochter Aeltjen in ·ÄòDen Gulden Mortier·Äô op nummer 29. Samen met zijn schoonzoon Willem Delff bezat hij ook een huis op nummer 18, en in 1639 kocht hij nog een pand voor maar liefst 2010 gulden. Zijn atelier vestigde hij later in het pand ·ÄòSpangien·Äô op de Oude Delft nummer 71.

Onder zijn leerlingen waren bekende namen als Paulus Moreelse, Anthony palamedesz en Jan Anthonisz van Ravesteijn.

In het Archief van de Weeskamer te Delft is een inventaris van de boedel te vinden (nrs. 3945-3953). Uit die stukken blijkt ook dat de kinderen van Willem Jacobsz van Delft en van Johan van Beest mede-erfgenamen waren van Van Mierevelt.
