Christian Hansson Snell var sersjant ved Faste Sunnmørske kompani under Bergenhus Regiment da han ble utskrevet tilkrigstjeneste høsten 1709.

Han tjenestegjorde under hele felttoget i den store nordiske krig inntil han kom hjem 19 sept 1719 sammen med sitt kompani som da var Nye Lusterske kompani. Han var da utnevnt til Capitain de Armes, altså øverste underbefal i sin enhet. Han giftet seg året senere med Anne Marie Bremer.

Hans far, Hans Henrikson Snell, deltok samtidig under hele krigen. Hans startet som sekondløytnant og avanserte til kaptein og kompanisjef. Han ble mot slutten av krigen overført som sjef for Nye Lusterske kompani og var trolig fremdeles sjef der da han døde i 1721.

Under denne krigen ble nesten 10% av befolkningen på Vestlandet utskrevet til krigstjeneste. Dette utgjorde i overkantav 9000 mann. Mot slutten av krigen forteller sorenskrivere flere steder at bygdene er i ferd med å avfolkes, og at det nesten ikke finnes igjen arbeidsføre menn. Rundt 2000 mann fra landsdelen dør i løpet av felttoget, enten i strid eller av sykdommer. Ulike avdelinger deltar i strid ved Gøteborg, København og Halden.

Omtrent halvparten av mannskapene i Faste Sunnmørske og i Faste Nordfjordske kompanier faller og kommer aldri hjem igjen til bygdene.
