Obituary

Dr. John Arendz DVM of Middleton, Annapolis Co., Nova Scotia

Middleton Funeral Home

ARENDZ, Dr. John, DVM ~ a long-time resident of Middleton, Nova Scotia, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Valley Regional Hospital.  Born June 11, 1926, in Drachten, the Netherlands, where he also received his early education during the Great Depression and Second World War. 

After serving in the Dutch military in Indonesia, he studied Veterinary Medicine at Ryks Universiteit of Utrecht. 

He met his wife, Ann (nee Flokstra) and after marrying in 1957, immigrated to Canada in 1958 where they settled in Yarmouth. 

1960 brought the move to Middleton and the establishment of Valley Veterinarians in partnership with the late Dr. Gerry Sheehy. 

In 1981, John joined the Food Production and Inspection Branch of Agriculture Canada which later transformed into Agri Food Canada, from which he retired in 1987.  

His most favourite time was spent with family at the Zwicker’s Lake cottage.  

He was also actively involved in the community.

    ⁃    Past President of the Nova Scotia Veterinary Medical Association 

Loving father of Rita Arendz, CD (Fred Haire), Barrie, ON and Jacqueline Lewis (Perri), Victoria Vale, NS.   Grandfather of Jonathan Lewis, FO (Danielle), Victoria Vale, NS and Dr. Stefanie Lewis, DO (Naunie), Freeport, ME, USA.  And great grandfather to Brynne, Brock, and Willa Lewis.

The family wishes to thank all of the Doctors, nurses and support staff of Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, NS, for their kindness during his final days.  Family would also like to thank Dr. Leslie Ribiero(family doctor) and the wonderful caregivers with Senior Homecare by Angels, Berwick, NS.  

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A family service will take place at a later date. In honour of his memory, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
