    Elk boek, of serie boeken, beslaat een tijdsperiode van 3 - 10 jaar binnen een parochie. Elk jaar tot 1894 bezocht de Parochiepriester elk huishouden en testte elke persoon op zijn kennis van de catechismus. Zij verzamelden ook informatie over geboortedata, huwelijken, overlijdens, waarheen of waarvandaan mensen verhuisd waren, enz. Elk jaar kwam de priester terug en actualiseerde de informatie van het vorige jaar en vermeldde de wijzigingen van huisbewoners. Na 1894 waren de onderzoeken minder gericht op kennis van de leer en meer op de telling van de Zweedse bevolking.MyHeritage heeft een naamindex gemaakt voor de meer dan 8 miljoen afbeeldingen die door haar Zweedse partner ArkivDigital zijn aangeleverd. Dit deel van de Zweedse huishoudsonderzoeksboeken(Husförhörslängder), dekt grotendeels de jaren 1860-1947, op enkele uitzonderingen na voor de vroege jaren 1800 en de late jaren 1700. De Onderzoeksboeken vormen een onschatbare verzameling die inzicht kan verschaffen in de Zweedse familiesamenstelling, van de geboorte tot de dood of van de emigratie. Omdat de boeken elk jaar werden geactualiseerd kunnen families van jaar tot jaar worden gevolgd en vaak van plaats naar plaats door het land. Tot 1894 bezocht de Parochiepriester elke boerderij of elk huis binnen zijn parochie om van elke persoon het begrijpen van de catechismus te documenteren. Na 1894 werden de Onderzoeksboeken vervangen door Församlingsbok, records van de Zweedse Kerk die gebruikt werden om de bevolking officieel van jaar tot jaar te tellen, maar de focus op het onderzoeken van de kennis van de catechismus was weggelaten.
