Vart Konfirmert i Ringebu Stavkirke,1917.Var ei tid lærgutt som Fyrbøter på et godstog mellom Ringebu og Hamar..Flytta deretter til Dombås som skyssgutt på Turisthotellet der.Derifrå flytta han til trøndelag og tok arbeid på nordlandsbanen,mellom Sunnan og Snåsa.Kom til Kvam i 1923,og tok arbeid som tømmerhogger hos bangdalsbruket.Vart kjent med Karin Anna Guin,fødd på Vesterdalen i dalsbygda i Kvam.Ho mista far sin som døde av spanskesyken i 1918.Overtok garden Vesterdalen,som vart heimen til barna som dei fikk.
