De Hoytinga's waren oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Idsegahuizen, alwaar de familiestate stond. Al in 1490 wordt de naam Hoytinga voor het eerst genoemd.Bijzitter van Wonseradeel (een soort wethouder) Sjoerd Tjerks Hoytinga en zijn vrouw Tialck Douwes Popma worden in 1614 als bewoners genoemd van sate Bruyndyk (stemnr. 7) te Schettens. Dit is de boerderij waar nu de fam. Tjalle Reitsma op woont. Als Tialck dan in 1619 overlijd, is ze de eerste die wordt bijgezet in de (nieuwe) grafkelder in de kerk. Waarschijnlijk heeft toen Sjoerd de grafsteen laten maken. Hij gaf hiervoor opdracht aan Pieter Claes Antiek. Deze beroemde beeldhouwer had toen al de steen voor Jancke van Osinga gemaakt in dezelfde kerk. Ook de stenen voor alle latere Van Osinga's heeft hij gemaakt, met als hoogtepunt natuurlijk de steen uit 1621 van Sybrand van Osinga. Zijn oudste dochter, Riemke Hoytinga, huwde Hille Douwes. Deze Hille Douwes sloot in 1642, samen met Juff. Aysma (dit is Tiemck van Osinga, weduwe van Schelte Hotzes van Aysma), op een zondag de deur van de kerk te Schettens. Dit was omdat ds. Fabius weigerde met emiraat te gaan, dat hem vanwege zijn blindheid en de ruzies met de (kerkelijke) gemeente reeds was toegestaan door de classis. Dit gaat echter niet van harte, zodat de classis, via de grietman Aylva, de Friese Staten in moet schakelen, om ds. Fabius uit de pastorie te krijgen. Volge
