Donald Jay Noorlander was born June 11, 1927 to John Hendrik and Wipkje (Minnie) Noorlander; in Ogden, Weber, Utah. Don was the first of eight children. Donald was a very large baby and was in the birth canal too long which deprived him of oxygen, therefore he was somewhat handicapped. Labor was very difficult for Minnie - Donald was 14 pounds. When Donald was very young he swallowed some lye thinking it was powdered sugar. He had to swallow yards of string to keep his throat from closing shut while healing from this incident. Donald was a student at the American Fork Training Center and was there for 52 years. There he was involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Seminary program. He graduated from seminary 12 consecutive years (1970-1981). He was a Deacon within the Aaronic Priesthood, and received an award for 85% attendance to sacrament meetings. Brother Terree Haggard, LDS Seminary faculty quote: "Donald is a very unique individual. He has great sensitivity and understanding of others. Donald is very dependable, when he says he will do something I know it will get done. Sometimes Donald is a little shy, but once he relaxes, he then enjoys taking part in class activities." Gary Whited, LDS Seminary Staff quoted, "Donald has provided irreplaceable assistance the past few years as he has helped 3 deaf/blind profoundly (handicapped) students, both in class and as they return to their building. Few other people, even among those who are not handicapped, would be as diligent as he has been. I really consider Don to be a great friend. Thank you for allowing him to be a part of our program." Donald loved the little animals and participated in 4-H projects in livestock, crafts and cooking. He won ribbons for showing dairy goats at the Utah County Fair (first Place), First Place Rabbits at the Utah State Fair in Salt Lake City 1980. Donald praticipated in the Special Olympics and received several medals which on the medals it stated:"Skill-Courage- Sharing Joy". Donald was by far "the Gentle Giant" always helping others. He truly emulated his Savior, by loving others. Donald died November 14, 1987, at the American Fork Hospital of heart failure. He'll be missed.
