Jerry (Jurgen aka Jurrien) De Vries was married 3 times. He had two children in

first marriage which took place in Netherlands. One child, Andrew, changed his name from De Vries

to De Vere;

nine children with the second wife, Aljedena Kupier; and one child with the

third wife, Rentje aka Renstze Alting who immigrated to the US in 1906 with her

family, Weiringa.

Aunt Minnie (De Vries White) said that her father, Jerry De Vries (Jurgen) was employed by the railroad. After his wife, Aljedena, died in 1907 he met and married Nellie (Nettie)Wierienga whom he met at the Dutch Reform Church. Nellie had arrived in the U. S.in 1907-1909 with five children the youngest of which was lost at Devil's Island, New York. It is said that she died of a contageous disease which she contracted during the trip from Holland. The family was not allowed to see the dead child and they all believe that she did not die but was taken and adopted by someone. She was a beautiful blond, blue eyed, Dutch child! The trip from Holland took two weeks. Each family was required to provide all of their own food and water used during the trip.

In 1909 Jerry loaded the entire family on a train and traveled to Colorado. Nellie could not speak any English and felt very isolated in Colorado so the family returned to Chicago. Aunt Minnie said she believes she was conceived in Colorado - - was born in 1910 in Chicago.
