Foto: Harstad Tidende Hjalmar Rubach (Adolf Hjalmar Kyrre Adolfsen Rubach), født 25. april 1884, død 3. september 1968, var musikkløytnant, komponist, dirigent og arrangør. Han var gift med Anna Rubach, født 28. august 1891, død 30. mars 1970, og de hadde mange barn. Hjalmar Rubach var en betydelig skikkelse i Harstads kulturliv i flere tiår, og flere av hans barn, barnebarn, oldebarn har tatt opp arven og gjort en innsats for byens musikkliv. Rubach fikk sin utdannelse ved Troms Stifts Underoffisersskole fra 1903 til 1907, som dengang var både middelsskole og befalsskole. I 1911 ble han ansatt som lærer ved den samme skolen. Senere ble han ansatt som klarinettist ved 6. Divisjons Musikkorps (Divisjonsmusikken) og ble benyttet som arrangør i helesin tjenestetid der. 10. februar 1927 var Rubach med på å stifte Harstad Guttemusikkorps og satt dessuten i korpsets «lovkomite». Han ble naturlig nok korpsets første dirigent. Korpset skiftet i 1931 navn til Harstad Ungdomsmusikkorps, og i 1973 ble navnet igjen forandret til Harstad Janitsjar. Hjalmar Rubach ble i 1927 dirigent for U.L. «Solhov»s strykeorkester på Lundenes. Det går ennå frasagn på Grytøya om dirigenten som ofte måtte ta robåten fatt for å komme til disse øvelsene. Det var neppe en fornøyelse i mørke og ruskevær over Toppsundet. Den første tiden bodde han hos musikerne etter tur, senere fikk han hus i «Gammelgården» for en sum av kr 1 pr. natt. Der satt han seinkvelds og skrev ut noter fra store musikkverk til mer enn tjue forskjellige instrumenter, men så fikk han «hele» to kroner for jobben. I 1947 ble det gjort en innspilling for NRK Troms med tre musikkstykker samt intervju med Hjalmar Rubach. I 1928 ble Hjalmar Rubach sangkoret Vaarbuds første dirigent, og i 1933 ble han også dirigent for sangkoret Lurlokk, samt Harstad Baptistkor. I 1942 rømte han til Sverige og meldte seg til tjeneste der da de norske polititroppene ble opprettet. I Sverige ble han samtidig dirigent for to sivile korps. Under frigjøringen av Norge i mai 1945 ledet han Polititroppenes Musikkorps ved innmarsjen i Trondheim. Korpset på 24 mann skapte storjubel. I 1950-åra var Hjalmar Rubach tilbake som dirigent for Harstad Ungdomsmusikkorps og ble dessuten mye brukt som gjestedirigent rundt i Lofoten og Vesterålen. Da flyselskapet SAS skulle åpne sin flyrute over Nordpolen i 1954, ble det utlyst en konkurranse om en marsj som skulle benyttes under åpningsfestlighetene. Rubach vant, og Krinkastingsorkestret spilte vinnermelodien under åpningsseremonien den 15. november 1954. For sin innsats på musikkens område fikk Hjalmar Rubach i 1950 Kongens fortjenstmedalje i gull.
