Han kunne kjøpe seg et par kalosjer for en månedslønn. Han møtte Åsta der, hun var tjenestejente. De giftet seg og overtok etterhvert småbruket Myran. Han ønsket å bygge et enetasjes hus på flata ved dalen før Vikengården, men fikk for mye motbør. Han laget møbler selv, blandt annet et stort uttrekksbart kjøkkenbord og 12 stoler. Dette var i bruk frem til at vi fikk litastue og (innlagt vann)bad i 1975. Under krigen var det tyskere stasjonert i Mastu på gården. Far var formann i Bonde- og Småbrukerlaget en lengre periode. Han vav fosterfar for Knut en kort periode ca 1945-47 til mora hentet ham. Han oppfostret også barnebarna Åse og Laila fra 1955-1959 og 1963 til 1976. Motto: Kan du ikke gjøre ting ordentlig - så kan du like godt la væreå gjøre det! (Kain du itj gjørrå de orntli så let de vårrå!).
