'''Fra Beiarn Soknekals Historie: (Vegusdal)''' Jens Benjamin Andersen ble født i Beiarn 1830, døde 1881. Han var bror til Jon Andersen (Gråtå-Jo). Han giftet seg i 1856 med Oline Sakarine Sakariasdtter, Tyvåslett. f. 1837. Da Jens døde reiste hun og de fleste barna til Amerika. '''Jens B. Andersen''' var som sin bror en dyktig kar på mange omrader, særlig var han vidgjeten som knivarbeider, slik at han sine siste år gikk under navnet «Kniv-Jens». Han kaltes forøvrig også for «Bakk-Jens». fordi han bodde på Bakken, Gråtåbakk. Allerede før han ble ansatt som lærer var han en tid vikar og hjelpelærer for sin bror Jon Andersen. Han virket som lærer fra 1862 da Jon sluttet og til 1887da han måtte slutte på grunn av forordningen om at det bare skulle være fullt utdannede lærere ved skolen. Som skolemester var han i motsetning til sin bror dyktig og flittig og overholdt nøye skoletiden. Han holdt på fra kl. 9 og til kl. 6. Motzfeldt Rengård forteller at han som smågutt var i skolestuen hans og hørte på undervisningen. Jens var høytidelig og omstendelig og hadde en god evne til å lære barna. Følgende irettesettelse skal være karakteristisk for hans måte å være på: «Løgna ska' du lkkj' kom' te' gards me'; den sku' du ha lagt igjen neri føruskogen førdu kom te' gards!» Kisten som han bar skolesakene i kaltes for «Arken». Den bar han på sin rygg mellom skolekretsene. Det fortelles at en gang skulle presten Kaurin opp og holdt eksamen i Jens Andersens distrikt. Føret var slik at hesten matte settes igjen nede på Heminghytt og bena tas fatt. Presten som var låghalt hinket avsted før Jens var ferdig til å følge med. Men han skulle nokta presten igjen, mente han. Men denne hadde tenkt å spille Jens et puss, og oppe på Høyforsmoen hang han pelsen på en gren ved veien. Jens kom dit, fikk se den og måtte ta den med seg. Lengre oppe fant han prestens stav med nok et klesplagg på, og dette matte han også bære, og det endte med at han tapte kapp- gangen.
