    Deze volkstelling week af van voorgaande Noorse volkstellingen door civiele gemeentes te gebruiken in plaats van kerkelijke parochies, als de volkstelling districten voor het platteland. De volkstelling van 1891 is ook uniek omdat het afrekende met het lijstformaat, dat in voorgaande tellingen gebruikt werd en in plaats daarvan een apart formulier voor iedereen gebruikte. Dit stelde de regering in staat meer informatie dan voorheen te verzamelen, zoals informatie over de woonomgeving van iedere burger, de verwantschap tussen huwelijkspartners en de taal en culturele informatie van de inheemse Sami's. Omdat iedereen zijn of haar eigen vragenformulier had, in de verzameling gepresenteerd als een digitaal image gerelateerd aan elk geïndexeerd record, moet een onderzoeker de records en images, van de andere familieleden bekijken om alle informatie te vinden, die voor leden van een familie zijn verzameld. Andere informatie, die niet in de index aanwezig is, zoals beroep kan gevonden worden in de digitale beelden. Gemeentenamen en grenzen zijn aanzienlijk veranderd sinds deze volkstelling gehouden werd. De gemeentenamen in deze index kunnen anders gespeld zijn en andere grenzen hebben dan de huidige gemeentes. Gedetailleerde informatie over gemeentewijzigingen kunnen gevonden worden in de Nationale Archieven van Noorwegen. De index van de 1891 volkstelling is compleet met records voor alle personen, die het opsomt en alle records hebben een bijbehorend digitaal image. De images worden aangeboden in samenwerking met de Nationale Archieven van Noorwegen.
