In 777 stichtte Gustaaf Forteman een Christelijke kerk, die later toegewijd werd aan de aartsengel Michael. De kerk kwam ten oosten van het dorp Almenum, waar de Fortemannen hun state (huisstede) hadden. Deze kerk was de eerste in Friesland, tussen het Vlie en de Laauwers. De eerste openbare godsdienstoefeningen in dit gewest werden dan ook in de nieuw gebouwde kerk van Forteman gehouden. De wanden van de kerk waren van hout en het dak van riet gemaakt.
