Notes about Edzard Willem Koning

Edzard Willem Koning werd op 3 mei 1869 geboren te Winschoten. Na zijn gymnasiumtijd ging hij in 1886 in Den Haag naar de Koninklijke academie van beeldende kunsten. In de herfst van 1891 vertrok Edzard naar Parijs, waar hij negen maan den op Monmartre woonde. In de zomer daarop maakte hij een trektocht door Normandie. In september 1892 keerde Edzard terug naar Nederland en verbleef eerst korte tijd in Den Haag en vervolgens tot 1895 weer in Winschoten. In de zomer van dat jaar ging hij samen met de schilder en graficus Simon Moulijn (1866-1948) naar het landgoed "De Steeg" bij Rheden en bleef daar tot 1898. Van Moulijn leerde Edzard het lithograferen. In 1900 trouwde hij met Alberdina Margaretha Tonckens. Het echtpaar vestigde zich in Scherpenzeel, waar de eerste dochter, Aleida Maria, geboren werd. Vier jaar later verhuisden zij naar Nunspeet, waar de tweede dochter, Eduarda Thalia, Ter wereld kwam. In 1918 werd Amersfoort hun woonplaats. In 1926 liet Edzard op het stuk land, dat hij al jaren tevoren samen met zijn broer Arnold in Voorthuizen gekocht had, een huisje bouwen dat hij als atelier inrichte. De tien volgende jaren reisde hij hier vanuit zijn woonplaats Den Haag regelmatig naar toe om in de natuur te werken. In 1930 overleed zijn vrouw. In 1932 reisde Edzard opnieuw voor korte tijd naar Parijs. Nadat hij in 1935 een zeereis per vrachtschip naar Spanje had gemaakt, woonde hij van 1936 tot 1940 te Voorthuizen en verbleef daarna weer twee jaar in Den Haag. De oorlogsjaren bracht hij door in Assen, op het adres Stationsstraat 11, waarna hij de laatste negen jaren van zijn leven opnieuw in Den Haag woonde, waar hij op 21 februari 1954 overleed.
