In 1932 hebben Johannes en Dieuwertje een zoon geadopteerd. Bij koninklijk besluit is de naam van de adoptiezoon toen Scheringa Mijdema geworden.
In 1943 is Johannes Mijdema gearresteerd en vervolgens in 1945 overleden.Hij zat in het verzet. Hij is in Neuengamme overleden in 1945.
