Herman was dagloner voordat hij zouaaf werd op 11 december 1867. Hij zou niet meer deelnemen aan gevechten omdat de troepen van Garibaldi definitief verslagen waren. Na een verblijf van tweeenhalf jaar in Rome keerde hij op 16 juni 1870 terug naar Oudenbosch. Hij was drager van de Bene-Merenti medaille en lid van de Confrère du Sacrécoeur a Basse-Motte van de Zouavenbroederschap Oudenbosch.
