Maurits van Thijn was een zoon van Lodewijk van Thijn en Betje van der Horst. Hij was afkomstig uit een familie van vleeshouwers. Hij trouwde op 20 november 1922 in Schoten (Haarlem) met Hanna Keizer, een dochter van de slager Lodewijk Keizer en Henderina van de Kaars.

Het echtpaar verhuisde naar Zutphen waar in februari 1924 hun dochtertje Bettij werd geboren; zij overleed echter al na vier maanden. In 1941 woonde het echtpaar in ieder geval nog in Zutphen aan de Teniersstraat 35. Daarna duikt Maurits (en vermoedelijk ook zijn vrouw Hanna) onder in Nijmegen. In Zutphen stond Maurits op het deportatie-overzicht geregistreerd als "onvindbaar".

In 1945 geeft Hanna aan dat haar man in 1943 - dus tijdens de onderduik - in Nijmegen is overleden. Waarom of waaraan hij is overleden is verder niet bekend. Het gebeurde vaker dat onderduikers overleden, soms door spanning, ziekte of verwaarlozing of een combinatie van deze factoren.
