Grandad was 4 years old when his mother died. Hisgrandmotherhelped take care of him and his brother and sisters when theywere little. He only went to school through fourth grade as hisfather assumed he'd just be a farmer and didn't need any moreeducation. His father remarried when Granddad was about 9 yearsold. Lucy , his father's new wife, was not much olderthanGranddad's oldest sister, Bertha. When Granddad was old enoughto go to work he moved to Jefferson City to live with hisbrother, George.Granddad met Grandma at a dance hall in Jefferson City, MO. Sheand one of her sisters were working at a shoe factory there tosupport themselves while their brother, Art, wason trial forsome trouble he had gotten into. He said it was a littlestrange as neither of them usually went to places like that. They were married Jan 21, 1920 in Carrollton, MO and Granddadfarmed the homestead on shares with his in-laws for a while, however Grandma was just not strong enough to help out with thefarm work, so they moved to Kansas City where Granddad got a job- about 1930-31.They got an small apartment - all the kidsslept together in one bed- Mom, Doris, Carl and maybe Ray. (Ofcourse, when Grandma grew up there were 13 children in a onebedroom farm home built by her dad.)After a couple of years the factoryclosed and they all had tomove back to the farm. They had to move temporarilyinto an oldhouse on the farm that had been used as a chicken coop. Theyhad toscrub it down and papered it with newspapers to make ithabitable. Granddad worked for different farmers doing farmlabor. Then, when the WPA started, he got a job there workingat a rock quarry. At first he had to walk 10 miles one way towork, but when he got his first pay check he bought a car.Grandpa Burks wasa wonderful grandfather. I remember hesometimes came home from work, reached into his pocket and gavemy sister and I each a nickel to go the the corner grocery toget an ice cream cone. He had affectionate names for us like"short and dirty," and "dutch" (because he couldn't understandwhat we were saying). I don't remember him ever complaining orcriticizing, but he always looked for something good to say. Hewas fair and honest. I don't remember him ever spanking me,butI had no doubt he would have if I needed it. After one visit toour home I remember my son commenting, " I want to be agrandfather like that." I think there is no better praise thanthat.
