Notes about James Milton STANDLEY

"Obit from Anne Brunt:'Died on Sunday morning March 22, 1874 of pneumonia, MiltonStandley, in the 42nd year of his age. The subject of thissketch was born in this county. Having passed his early lifehere while schools were few and educational advantages wereincomplete, he felt the want of an education and that feelingprevented him from taking the lead among his fellow-citizens,which his solid common sense, his sterling integrity and hissound judgement fairly entitledhim to do. Naturally of aquiet, retiring dispostiion, he hesitated in puttingforward hisopinion among men, preferring to follow rather than to lead.Within a year or two, however, he had come to take a more activepart in the duties of citizenship, and the church, the publicschool, and all other institutions with which the genius ofprogress is destined found in him a strong, earnest friend andchampion. It is rarely, indeed, that any community is calledupon to mourn the loss of a worthier citizen, and Carroll Countyhas not many worthier than he to lose. In him we have lost agenerous, public spirited and intelligent citizen, his neighborsa kindly and pleasant fried, and his family mourn theirreparableloss of a husband and father whose memory willremain fragrant of loving acts and of thoughtful, earnest andhopeful words in all the years of their affliction. He died ashe lived, a sincere and earnest Christian, and his pathwaythrough the Valley of the Shadow of Death was cheered by theeternal hope of a blessed immortality.Funeral services took place at the residence of the deceased andwereconducted by Rev. J. M. Goodson. He had known the deceasedfrom birth to death. he remarked that this was the fourthmember of the family that had been called hence within a month.Burial at the family graveyard near the Trotter Schoolhouse.'"
