"James lived with his parents at Cluan until 1871 when he we nt to work as an overseer on a property called "Kingsdon" at Needles. In about 1890, he and Lucy moved to "Overdale" ( Roland) in the early days of Kentish and when Brown and Moyse established a Gospel Hall assembly in the district, they became very early members. James was an able preacher and a good helper. He was killed at 10 a.m. on 11th January , 1894 aged 49 years, while he and his sons were felling trees on the part of the property now owned by his great, great grandson, Greg Byard. Lucy Byard donated land for the Roland Gospel Hall in 1917. (Source = Alan Dyer). At the time of Eva's birth, James is shown as a farm overseer of Kingsdon; later births show him as a farmer but variously of Chudleigh and Dairy Plains. He was killed by a falling tree."
