"Aileen commenced her schooling in Staverton and walked the long journey each day until a school was built in Roland . When she was 13 her family decided she was needed more at home. She worked long hours on the farm until she was 19 when she moved to Sydney to live with her sister Gwen who had moved there previously. Aileen met her husband Athol in Sydney after the war. He was in the RAAF and stationed at Richmond at that time. After they marr., she accompanied him on his moves to Temora (NSW), Laverton (Vic) and Mallala (SA). They returned to Tasmania where they had a sheep and potato farm at Roland. Eventually, they moved to SA, Athol's home state, where Athol worked as a clerk with the Mines Department for 10 years, progressing to senior clerk. They later farmed 100 acres at Balaclava. During her marr. years, Aileen had no greater wish than to have children, something she was unfortunately denied. Their only son, Robert, only survived a few days. Aileen's warmth extended to other family members and, over the years, she provided respite care for the children of her brothers and sisters. Her most difficult moments were having to hand a child back. In 1960, her foster son Dennis came into her life. His mother had died and his father unable to cope. Aileen opened her heart and finally had a son to lavish her love on. Dennis was given the best of care and a wonderful education. Aileen came home to Tasmania in 1987 where she lived at East Devonport for 12 years. Family and friends were always welcome and Aileen enjoyed bowling and played competitively until her leg problems began. Poor circulation fnally took its toll and her leg was amputated in April 1999. Remarkably, she recovered from this and resumed driving and visiting friends. They moved back to Sheffield where Aileen had wanted to live for a long time but by that time her health was not good. She died on 12 Jul 2000 with Dennis by her side." Courtesy Marguerite Byard
