Notes about Abigail Abbey

Auxiliary to the Herkimer County Temperance Society
List of Members

Note on original: "This list is contained in a small homemade book once the property of Columbus A. Morgan & now [Note: 1928] in the possession of Mrs. Clara Perkins Gates, West Winfield, N.Y. The book also contains a copy of the society's bylaws. This and the list of names are all in the same handwriting, presumably that of Columbus A. Morgan. No date appears anywhere in the book. The date can not, however, have been later than 1835, since Benjamin Cole, one of the members listed, died in April of that year. The earliest possible date is difficult to determine with exactness, with the data now at hand; but it probably was about 1826 or a little later. Roxey Ann Huntley was born in 1812, & might have joined before 1826, since an article of bylaws denies the right to vote, to members under fourteen. Hannah Morgan, a half-sister of Columbus Morgan, was born in 1819, and may be the Hannah Morgan here listed, which would place the earliest date at about 1830 or later. The name "Aurena McKee" also appears; there was no Aurena in the McKee family, but Currence, wife of James McKee Sr, came from Vermont in March 1826; & Betsey Carcena Eldred was married to Samuel McKee in March 1829; either Currence or Carcena might have been misread Aurena from the original signature and have been so written by Mr. Morgan in his list. It seems more likely to have been Currence, since Mr. Morgan would have been familiar with the name of Betsey Carcena Eldred McKee."
